![]() Whatever love exists between them is an utterly private, uncelebrated thing.” (Lahiri, 138) “Gogol is reminded that in all his life he has never witnessed a single moment of physical affection between his parents. He sees them as an example of what happens with arranged marriages. The first thing that must be mentioned is that Gogol notices the relationship between his parents. In The Namesake however, there are many points that are made. In the end, there was really no conclusion, but I don’t really mind because my older brother is the one who’s going to have to go through marriage first. I made my point that the people getting married should have the say of who they want to marry. She made the argument that arranged marriages have a very low divorce rate (which is true). Believe it or not, even with me being only 17 years of age, we have had a serious debate on the better method of marriage. In doing so, she is indirectly trying to convince me that arranged marriage is the superior method. My mother brings up stories about my cousins who have had arranged marriages, and how amazing it is to have everyone in the family attend such joyous occasions. My mother’s logic in a memeĪlthough I have (thankfully) not yet been pressured into having an arranged marriage, this idea has always been a part of my life. For me personally, I don’t like the idea of our parents choosing our life partner, as this person should be someone you yourself know you’ll be happy with. It seems like a very popular thing to do in India even nowadays, as over 90% of marriages in India are arranged. ![]() My issue is when the influences of the family might force children into an arranged marriage when they might not want to marry this way. I am fine with people conducting arranged marriages where both the bride and groom are consented towards it I have no problem with that. My opinion: arranged marriages are completely unfair because each individual should be able to marry the person they love and not a person chosen by family. Although it wasn’t as cultured as it might be in India itself, it was an arranged marriage regardless. His mom (Ashima) brought up the idea of seeing Moushumi, and set up the union. Now, in a sense, this is what Gogol had to undergo. Arranged marriage isn’t only the marriage of two people, rather, it is the marriage of two families. Many people believe that arranged marriage is outdated, but many others still practice this tradition. ![]() Generally, these marriages happen in a very traditional sense as they were very popular back in the day. Arranged marriage is a type of marriage that is agreed to by the families of the bride and groom, who themselves often have very little input in the matter. I want to start off this blog post by explaining what arranged marriage is, since that will be the main focus of this post.
